Camille Huysmans, one of Belgian’s most colourful and ground-breaking figures with international appeal, was born 150 years ago. About time for a tribute concert. This programme reflects both his professional and personal life. As mayor of Antwerp, he inaugurated a monument in honour of fellow Flemish composer Peter Benoit. Indeed, Huysmans was also a passionate music lover and amateur musician, and he loved the Flemish Dances of Jan Blockx. As a Man of Letters, and active politician, he was fascinated by the Middle Dutch tale of Reynaert the Fox. In its honour, Flemish composer Hans Vercauteren wrote the Reinaert Fantasie.  And, finally, to round off this programme: “You must not miss out on Brahms’ fourth, it is music about a different, better world.”
