From its rousing opening chords and famous waltz melody to the melancholy funeral march and on to the rapid finale: almost no work is quite as evocative as Beethoven’s Third Symphony. Conductor Benjamin Haemhouts and Casco Phil will together present this musical monument “to the memory of a great man”, as Beethoven himself said after he initially dedicated the symphony to Napoleon Bonaparte, but later changed his mind. And just in case one icon wasn’t enough, the programme will include another hit: Joseph Haydn’s Second Cello concerto.
For this piece we are delighted to welcome one of Belgium’s most exciting young musicians, Queen Elisabeth competition finalist Stéphanie Huang, who will join our musicians on stage to play this great cello work in one of our favourite venues, the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in our hometown Mechelen.
