Ironically, Mozart wrote his famous Requiem when he himself was on his deathbed. When he died, he left behind an incomplete score, as if his farewell to life did not signal the end of his music. And, indeed, his huge work for choir and orchestra is unearthly and beautiful, a source of comfort until today. The überromantic Schubert also eschewed earthly existence, with his motto “the inner life is the only life”. Just like Mozart, Schubert also left behind his most charming work in a fitting fashion, namely incomplete.
