[String quartet by Ciurlionis with Kurt Van Eeghem]

Kurt Van Eeghem, Čiurlionis : wel en wee van een geniaal kunstenaar, Pelckmans, 2022

Kurt Van Eeghem speaker

Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis only lived to 35. In his far too short of a life, he hardly knew recognition. But today, everyone agrees wholeheartedly that he was one of the most important Lithuanian artists of all time. A painter who pressed his brush on symbolism and laid the foundations for later European abstraction; a composer whose forward thinking put him on the programme alongside Medtner and Scriabin in St Petersburg; a self-proclaimed synesthete who heard colours and gave colour to sounds, which is why his canvases are often given musical titles and why his compositions are so colourful.

Former Klara presenter and curious music fanatic Kurt Van Eeghem went to the mighty Lithuanian forests, immersed himself in Čiurlionis’ life and love, and in particular in his art and his compositions. He released his book on the composer at Pelckmans in 2022 and now he is touring Flanders with it. Not just to promote his own words, but mostly to introduce you to these long-forgotten notes. Our musicians are only too happy to reprise these underappreciated quartets!
