Mission & Vision
Casco Phil (formerly the Belgian Chamber Philharmonic) is an innovative chamber orchestra that actively seeks out boundaries. Based in Mechelen and driven by the artistic vision of its chief conductor Benjamin Haemhouts, it has established itself as a distinctive presence in the Belgian concert landscape. As a flexible chamber orchestra, Casco Phil consists of a committed group of musicians who perform in a wide range of formations, from intimate chamber music to large-scale symphonic repertoire. Taking classical compositions as its point of departure, Casco Phil consciously looks beyond genre boundaries, venturing into contemporary avant-garde, jazz, and pop music.
A chamber orchestra as laboratory
Casco Phil is agile in form and uncompromising in quality. Its repertoire spans the classical canon as well as new or lesser-known works. The ensemble experiments with new concert formats and unexpected venues, and actively explores ways to make classical music accessible to the widest possible audience. Casco Phil presents itself as a musical laboratory, where experimentation and dialogue with other art forms take centre stage. Content takes precedence over form, resulting in a wide range of projects—preferably out of the box.
A new horizon for classical music
Casco Phil keeps its finger on the pulse of the latest developments and broadens the horizon of classical music. The orchestra regularly creates and programmes new work by Belgian composers, offers performance opportunities to emerging talent, and organises social projects for vulnerable groups. Alongside its artistic activities, Casco Phil also develops collaborations with the corporate sector, creating tailor-made projects in the form of unique concerts, workshops, and research trajectories.
Soloists and venues
In addition to its ambition to play a leading role in launching young soloists and composers, Casco Phil regularly collaborates with world-class musicians. The orchestra has worked with soloists such as Katia and Marielle Labèque, Jörgen van Rijen, Pieter Wispelwey, Lukáš Vondráček, Sylvia Huang, Gary Hoffman, Ibrahim Maalouf, and Mari Samuelsen. Casco Phil has also ventured into avant-garde, jazz, and pop music, resulting in collaborations with, among others, Bryce Dessner, Wayne Shorter, Jef Neve, Chris Potter, Marble Sounds, and Ozark Henry.
In recent years, Casco Phil has performed in major concert halls such as BOZAR, Concertgebouw Brugge, DE SINGEL, De Bijloke, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and De Doelen in Rotterdam, as well as in more unconventional settings including floating stages, moving trains, shop windows, and football stadiums. Internationally, Casco Phil has appeared on stages in the Netherlands, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.
Since 2023, Casco Phil has received structural subsidies from the Flemish Community.
